Cyclical corrosion tests

Cyclical corrosion testing combines cyclical salt mist tests with other climatic conditions such as, for example, condensation water or dry phases. The aim is to duplicate natural corrosion conditions as realistically as possible.

The composition of the cyclical corrosion tests varies according to the place of use of the components and the associated test stipulations.

Cyclical corrosion testing in accordance with VDA 233-102:

This test serves an evaluation of components by an accelerated testing procedure. Reproducible and realistic corrosion results resembling those found in practice are produced by this form of corrosion testing for the substrates of steel, galvanized steel and aluminium that are used in the automotive industry. The results from the corrosion testing can be transferred to various areas of application in automotive construction.

A seven-day test cycle consist of three different daily cycles. Here salt mist phases (1% NaCl solution), freezing phases and various climatic changes are combined.

Cyclical alternating stress in accordance with VDA 621-415:

This test is the predecessor of corrosion testing in accordance with VDA 233 – 102. It combines with a seven-day test cycle a salt mist phase, condensation water alternating climate and normal climate phases.

Accelerated corrosion test in accordance with VCS 1027, 1449:

The Volvo specification VCS 1027, 1449 describes a similar method to determine the corrosion resistance of automotive components. The influence of chloride ions, which occur in reality in marine environments or as road salt in winter as an example, is simulated in this test by the direct spraying of the test specimens with a 0.5% NaCl solution.

The 24-hour cycle consists of a wet phase at room temperature with intermittent direct spraying with saline solution, a drying phase and a climatic phase with high relative humidity.
